It is in these places that the war between Khaila and Covid will be fought as the themes of the novel unfold: light versus darkness, hope versus despair and life versus death. While Khaila's workers are loyal and committed, Covid's spiky green germs are resentful and rebellious. With such a cruel, slave-driving master at the head of this vast germ army, there is bound to be dissension in the ranks.
