Missy

A hymn drifts through the church choir-room, and ten-year-old Melissa feels its music and stained-glass colors mingle inside her until tears come—though she isn’t sad. Then Cousin Pete laughs when she tries to explain her “religious feeling.”

In sunny Cherryvale, Missy is discovering that growing up brings a fresh feeling at every turn—and that the grown-ups around her don’t always understand how large the world can seem to a ten-year-old. After Sunday school, one mournful hymn opens a door to a sweetness she longs to keep; at home, Pete’s teasing makes her wonder whether she can trust what she feels. Between family prayers, summer afternoons, and the puzzles of faith and feeling, Missy must find her own way to name the mysteries gathering around her. What else will she discover when she dares to listen to her heart?
