Terak finds that his reclusive, comfortable life seems to be missing something vital. Kusta and Anomi find there is no simple manner by which to arrive at a decision about the Crown which awaits her in Ronia.

Devaleh meanwhile has arrived at his limit for his wife's headstrong manner – and Tyelah has arrived at her own for his secrets. When the latest one reveals itself, she finds herself in a place even she is unable to describe. She has remained firm in her determination that she will never set aside her Soul-deep love for her husband – for ill or good, only the Fates themselves are able to say – yet this may indeed prove a step too far.

Now, Tara is arriving to live at Hummingbird Palace, as his wife. And there is yet another enemy who wishes Devaleh dead. Yet, for the time being, such concerns are, in truth, the lesser of his troubles.
