François-Marie Arouet (1694 – 1778), known by his  pseudonym Voltaire was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state.

“On Superstition” is a philosophic work by Voltaire in which he describes his thoughts about superstition. Superstition is to religion what astrology is to astronomy the mad daughter of a wise mother. "The superstitious man is to the rogue what the slave is to the tyrant” is the most notable statement by Voltaire concerning superstation.
