One Eye Uncle

Serialized between 1951 and '52 in the literary magazine Dagar edited by Laxmikanta Mahapatra, Kanamamu (One Eye Uncle) was an instant and lasting hit with readers. Easily one of the most popular of works of Oriya literature, it has never been out of print since its first appearance.

Comic revolutionary, a scourge of the British administration, a good Samaritan, a braggart and a buffoon, Kanamamu is surely one of the most lovable characters of Oriya fiction. Mahapatra's depiction of village life with all its unique social and religious customs, superstitions, friendships and feuds is a justly celebrated feature of this work.
