Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost (1667) is an epic Poem about good and evil.  Satan is a fallen angel and wakes up to find himself in Hell.  Satan rallies other fallen angels and they decide to destroy Adam and Eve.  

God in Heaven can see what Satan is planning and knows he will tempt mankind and Adam and Eve.  God points him out to the Son, prophesying that Satan will tempt Man to sin.

Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men".
