Peradventure

Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by John Everett Millais, Marianne North and John Sell Cotman. A boy from a Lambeth court is taken up by the church, sent to Cambridge, and finds that the faith he was given will not answer the questions his education has taught him to ask. Robert Keable was a priest who served as a chaplain in France, lost his own belief and left the ministry to write. The silence in the title is the book's subject, and he does not fill it in. Fifty-seven plates of Victorian and Edwardian painting, from Grimshaw's lamplit London streets to Landseer, picture the England of chapels, courts and crown that shaped Keable's lost faith.
