You have seen the word attached to healing — quantum healing, quantum medicine, quantum touch. This book explains what is actually behind it.

The short answer is nothing. Quantum mechanics describes matter at very small scales. The observer effect refers to physical interaction with a measuring apparatus, not to human consciousness. Entanglement does not let thought influence a distant body. Quantum coherence collapses essentially instantly in a warm, wet body. No physicist working in the field claims a healing mechanism, and none has been demonstrated. The word gets used precisely where an explanation is missing.

So if you want a book that tells you consciousness directs healing, this is not it, and you should know that now rather than after paying for it.

What is left when the physics is removed is considerably more interesting — and this book reports it with the numbers attached.

In a randomised trial in JAMA Psychiatry, 151 people with chronic back pain were assigned to psychological treatment, a placebo injection, or usual care. Sixty-six per cent of the treatment group finished pain-free or nearly pain-free, against 20 per cent on placebo and 10 per cent on usual care. Five years later, over half were still pain-free.

In the largest review of meditation research — 18,753 citations screened, 47 trials — mindfulness produced an effect size of 0.38 for anxiety at eight weeks, falling to 0.22 by six months. The same review found no evidence meditation beat drugs or exercise, and no clear effect on sleep or attention at all.

Both numbers are real. Holding both is the point.

Inside: why placebo pain relief is blocked by naloxone and therefore runs through the opioid system; the finding that placebos work even when patients are told they are placebos, with one honest saline injection reducing chronic back pain for a month and showing benefit at a year; the crossover trial in which about 90 per cent of statin side-effect burden also occurred on placebo tablets; the meta-analysis finding a correlation of roughly -0.42 between psychological stress and wound healing; and why chronic pain persists after tissue heals, and what can now be done about it.

There is a full chapter on where the evidence is weak or absent — energy healing, adrenal fatigue, detoxification, grounding, positive thinking and cancer survival — because a book that only reports what works is advertising.

And two things this book refuses to do. It will not tell you that you can think your way out of illness, because that is false and it adds guilt to being sick. And it will not suggest anything replaces medical care. It includes a page of symptoms that need a doctor first, and it means it.

For anyone who suspects there is something real in mind-body medicine but has stopped believing the marketing.
