At the start of Disher's exciting if somewhat contrived latest (after Mischance Creek), two former criminal associates—Adam Garrett and Grace—unexpectedly cross paths at a Brisbane stamp expo. After meeting in a western Sydney orphanage, they spent years as partners in crime stealing watches and other valuables. Their union unraveled after Det. Sgt. Galt arrested Grace during a botched robbery and blackmailed her into leaving Adam and carrying out thefts on his behalf. Grace has since shot Galt and gone on the run, and seeing Adam—though the two don't speak—makes her flee the expo and double down on hiding. She changes her name and takes a job at an antique store in a quiet country town, striking up a friendship with its owner, Erin, and hoping she's finally found a measure of stability. When a mechanic performing a routine repair on the store's car discovers tracking devices, however, Grace's vigilance intensifies—and the more she learns about Erin, the more she realizes her new friend is running from demons of her own. Disher keeps the narrative taut without skimping on character development, but the plot's dependence on coincidence undercuts some of the suspense. Still, this should satisfy the author's fans.
