Sanctuary

Demon-possessed sons and daughters of farm families on the Plains of Pathos slaughter loved ones as they sleep. This danger is overshadowed by the coming flood. In previous generations, farmers took refuge in the city of Twain when the sea submerged their lower-lying homes and fields. The people of Twain no longer consider the farmholders human.

The direwitch Lienne has no doubt that she can hunt down and slay the demon, Legion. Until she travels to Earth in pursuit of her quarry and its agents gravely injure her symbiote, leaving her with only a fraction of her former powers. Can her partnership with a witch from the homeworld allow Lienne to defeat Legion and his army of the possessed?

Perhaps the answer lies in Grundel, an ancient city with its own secrets, some of which are found in a community that defies the rigid gender norms of their culture. Lienne and her party track a sorcerer who claims to control Legion into Grundel's hills, which have a well-deserved reputation for violent, territorial clans. Vowing to save a baby the sorcerer has abducted with the worst of intentions, Lienne must adapt to the loss of her powerful magic and learn to use the subtler gifts that have replaced it.
