In Davos, Katharine Furse’s first skis had bindings she couldn’t adjust and boots that slipped inside them. She went straight downhill, sat down when they slid, and decided skiing was a poor game.

In the Alpine winters of the early twentieth century, Furse watched skiing grow from an unfamiliar pastime into a sport with clubs, coaches and competing schools of technique. In this 1924 guide, she draws on decades in the Alps to help beginners avoid her own ungainly start: choosing the right place, getting suitable equipment and learning how to travel across a slope instead of simply charging down it. A first ski holiday could mean wasted time, cold clothes and little pleasure—or the beginning of a lasting passion. Where should a novice go to find their footing?
