H.H. Munro, better known by the pen name Saki, was a prolific Scottish author of the Edwardian era, considered as the master of short stories.


"Sredni Vashtar" is a short story written between 1900 and 1911. Conradin, a sickly ten-year-old boy lives with his cousin and guardian, Mrs. De Ropp, whose he hated with a desperate sincerity. He secretly takes care of a polecat-ferret whom he calls Sredni Vashtar. He invents a religion of his own with Sredni Vashtar as the merciless and vengeful god. Conradin keeps the ferret hidden in a cage in the garden shed, and worships the idol in secret. The story comes to a culmination when Mrs. De Ropp once discovered his god…
