Stepping Heavenward

On her sixteenth birthday, Katherine Mortimer vows to mend her temper—then snaps at her mother before breakfast. By bedtime, a verse in her new Bible has left her wondering whether she is fit for heaven at all.

In the winter of 1831, Katy begins a journal to keep track of the person she hopes to become. Her good intentions meet the small trials of home and school: a missing collar, a snowy walk without overshoes, her mother’s gentle rebukes, and the friends whose affection she longs for. Katy knows she can be frank and conscientious, yet pride, impatience, and a wish to be pitied keep undoing her resolutions. And when illness confines her to the house, she has more time to look honestly at herself. Can she learn to change before the girl she is becomes the woman she will be?
