It was a mission impossible. On 25 April 1915 - the day the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli - Lt Cdr Dacre Stoker, Captain of the Australian sub AE2 and his crew set out on an almost suicidal voyage to breach the Dardanelles Strait, with orders to “Run Amuck” and disrupt Turkish supply line to Gallipoli.


Facing unknown dangerous currents, mines and withering enemy fire, the tiny sub succeeded where both British and French subs had failed.


It was proclaimed as “the finest feat in submarine history".
