Tenterhooks

Edith suggests Matilda for the new baby; Bruce wires back that he would rather she were called Aspasia. He has yet to meet his daughter—and is busy nursing an illness of his own.

In a white Knightsbridge flat, the Ottleys navigate family life with the sort of ceremony and self-importance that make even a baby’s name a battleground. Edith meets Bruce’s schemes with quiet wit, while young Archie keeps interrupting with one urgent request: her long buttonhook. Then Bruce accepts a dinner invitation from the Mitchells, a couple Edith has never met, and assures her the evening will be perfectly jolly. Between a telephone that won’t cooperate, a heavy chest, and Bruce’s confidence in his own infallible memory, the Ottleys are already at odds before they reach the door. What, exactly, awaits them at the Mitchells’?
