The Acharnians

At the Athenian assembly, Dicaeopolis arrives ready to bawl at anyone who speaks of anything but peace—and finds the Pnyx almost empty. When the officials finally appear, their first order is to silence the man asking to negotiate.

In wartime Athens, citizens crowd behind the city walls while their fields lie beyond reach. Aristophanes sets his comedy amid assemblies, official boasts and everyday complaints, following Dicaeopolis as he rails against the war and the talk that keeps it going. When an envoy promises riches from a distant king, Dicaeopolis is quick to spot a lie; when Amphitheus offers to seek peace, he is just as quick to defend him. But can one stubborn citizen make himself heard in a city that would rather shout him down?
