In following the lives of the congregation of a Methodist Church in pre-war Manchester this novel's heart is truly in the people it depicts, whether rich or poor, young or old, educated or less so.


When Robert Garner, the new Methodist Minister, arrives with his wife and son, the effect on the congregation and the ongoing relationships between them all are inextricably linked; just as the flock are to the bell-wether sheep.


From the everyday happenings through to the deeper convictions and beliefs of the characters we are able to follow this close-kint community and empathise with each individual.
