Novelist's Biography:

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet who is known for his wit, flamboyant personality, and contributions to the aesthetic movement. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and attended Trinity College, where he excelled in his studies.

After graduating, Wilde moved to London and became a prominent figure in literary and social circles, known for his dandyish dress and sharp wit. He wrote several plays, including "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Lady Windermere's Fan," and "An Ideal Husband," as well as novels such as "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "The Canterville Ghost."

In 1895, Wilde was imprisoned for homosexuality, which was illegal at the time. He was released from prison in 1897 and spent the remainder of his life in exile in France, where he wrote little and lived in poverty. He died in Paris in 1900 at the age of 46.

Wilde's works are known for their sharp wit, social commentary, and exploration of morality and aesthetics. He is considered one of the greatest writers of the Victorian era and his works continue to be read and studied today.

Synopsis:

"The Canterville Ghost" is a humorous short story by Oscar Wilde. The story follows an American family, the Otises, who move into a haunted mansion in England called Canterville Chase. The family is initially skeptical of the ghost that haunts the mansion, Sir Simon, who has been unsuccessfully scaring previous occupants for centuries.

The Otises soon realize that Sir Simon is indeed a ghost and attempt to scare him with modern inventions such as lubricating oil and a ghost-proof bed. Despite their efforts, Sir Simon cannot be scared and is ultimately humiliated by the Otises. However, one of the Otis children, Virginia, takes pity on Sir Simon and agrees to help him find peace.

Virginia helps Sir Simon find redemption and move on from his tragic past, allowing him to finally rest in peace. The story is a satirical take on the traditional ghost story and also critiques both British and American cultures.
