The Distant Portal

Thump! I was body slammed to the floor.

Two deputy sheriffs were on me and I was handcuffed before I could even finish telling the desk sergeant what I was doing there. It made no sense that I was frog marched to a cell and locked up. They took my bag with all my possessions in it; my daddy's flag and medals, my knife, and my harmonica. It's been three days now. They fed me some tortillas and beans and gave me water, but no explanation. Instead they just asked me more questions. On and on, non-stop. They wanted to know everywhere I had been and what I did there. I had no secrets so I told them everything except for the forged French passport the Gypsies got for me.
