Every generation of technologists inherits capability faster than it inherits wisdom about how to use it. The Ethical Technologist, now in its third edition, is David Tuffley's answer to that gap, a full-length course text grown out of his Applied Ethics and Sociotechnical Studies teaching at Griffith University, and substantial enough to serve as either a university unit's core reading or a working professional's self-directed education in the field. It was written for exactly the course learning outcomes it lists at the outset: the ability to explain the social implications of a computing professional's decisions, to analyse real ethical conflicts using an actual decision model rather than gut feeling, and to reason competently from professional codes of conduct to the specific, messy situations they are meant to govern.

The book opens with the case for ethics itself, not as an abstract virtue but as a practical necessity for anyone who builds, deploys or manages technology that affects other people's lives. From there Tuffley constructs a genuinely comprehensive framework. Early chapters profile the traits that distinguish ethical from unethical technical leaders, and introduce an Ethical Decision Model, developed with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, that gives readers an actual method for working through a dilemma rather than just a set of principles to admire from a distance. A code of ethical conduct chapter grounds this in the primacy of the public interest, honesty, competence and professional development, the substance of the professional codes IT practitioners are increasingly expected to know and apply.

The philosophical range of the book is unusually wide for a technology text. A full chapter surveys the major ethical traditions relevant to a working technologist, from Kantian duty and utilitarian calculation through Stoic and Buddhist thought to Kohlberg's stages of moral development, not as detached history but as competing lenses a reader can actually use when a real dilemma arises. Later chapters turn to the frontier questions that make this edition genuinely current: what artificial intelligence and automation mean for the future of work, whether a universal basic income is a realistic response, and what it means to extend human potential rather than simply be replaced by the machines we build. A clear-eyed chapter on the nature of evil, drawing on neuroscience and Tuffley's own account of a genuinely dangerous night driving a Brisbane taxi, grounds the abstract material in something recognisably human.

Two substantial appendices make the book usable in the classroom or the boardroom alike: a worked application of the Ethical Decision Model to real scenarios, and a set of common workplace dilemmas, from being pressured to disclose a former employer's secrets to being asked to quietly patch a defect you know your company should have disclosed, each worked through to a defensible resolution.

For undergraduate and graduate students, IT professionals seeking genuine grounding rather than a compliance checklist, and anyone who leads technical teams and needs a framework more durable than good intentions, The Ethical Technologist offers what its title promises: not a list of rules, but the equipment to think clearly when the rules run out.
