Synopsis
The Figure in Art identifies the universal, untutored human figure all people draw or sculpt as their first rendering. The rendering of the human figure exposes hidden truths and is a conduit to understanding perception. It teaches us about the structure of consciousness and the relationship between a culture’s economic base and its intellectual and artistic world view.
About the Author
Jon Bogle taught sculpture, figure modeling, and drawing at Lycoming College for 26 years. He retired, professor emeritus, in 2002. He has completed a number of commissions, has shown his sculpture nationally and internationally, and has traveled widely to regions of the world with strong sculptural traditions. Teaching at a small Liberal Arts college has led to insights into the methods used by the various disciplines to acquire and understand knowledge. It also revealed the profound differences between scholarship-based and experience-based education.
