“The Frozen Deep” novel is based on the real story of the doomed expedition to the Arctic. 

Frank Aldersley married Clara Burnham right before the expedition to find the North Passage. The same evening Clara rejected the offer of Richard Wardour, another admirer.  Ruined by her decline Wardour decided to join the expedition and started to think about his revenge not knowing that his opponent is a part of their crew as well. 

Two years later their ships got trapped in the ice and Wardour and Aldersley met each other. At that moment Richard knew the identity of his rival and was still set on the vengeance. And by the chance they both got order to separate from the main group.
