Comparison compromises its reputation
The Great Gatsby did not, for me, match its reputation. How could it? I had just finished Faulkner's Light in August, a masterpiece, a chef-d'oeuvre, evidence of unexcelled genius, that shines light into the depths of the human soul. By comparison, The Great Gatsby is a string of cheap shots and caricatures -- with, I admit, some pretty spots and catchy phrases, but tinsel and glitter compared to Faulkner.
