The Great Illusion

The Great Illusion by Norman Angell is a seminal work of political and economic thought that challenged the prevailing assumptions about war and national power in the early 20th century. First published in 1910, and continually updated thereafter, this influential book presented a bold thesis: that modern economic interdependence renders war between industrialized nations not only futile but self-destructive. Divided into three critical parts—The Economics of the Case, The Human Nature and Morals of the Case, and The Practical Outcome—Angell dismantles the traditional belief that military conquest brings economic advantage. He argues instead that the wealth of nations is based on the intricate network of global trade, finance, and labor—assets that cannot be seized or effectively exploited through force. The idea that empires and armed dominance can yield economic gain is, he contends, a "great illusion." In the moral and psychological sections, Angell explores the motivations behind conflict, debunking myths about human nature and national character. He presents a compelling psychological and ethical case for peace, emphasizing that prosperity and security lie not in armaments, but in cooperation and mutual understanding. Though written before World War I, The Great Illusion proved prophetic in its prediction that modern war would be catastrophic for all involved. The book sparked debate across Europe and America and significantly influenced peace movements, policymakers, and future international institutions. This classic remains powerfully relevant today as it speaks to the persistent mythologies that drive conflict and the enduring hope for a rational global order.
