The Light in the Clearing

A boy raised by an uncle in the St Lawrence country grows up among the politics of the young republic and the plain speech of the north woods. Bacheller wrote about upstate New York for forty years and this is the most autobiographical of them. This edition binds 56 plates by George Inness, Winslow Homer and Asher Brown Durand, among others, alongside three restored and coloured illustrations.
