THE LOST THINGS is made up of three short stories that will bring chills up your arms and a lingering wonderment of what's next for our loveable protagonists. As each story takes place in different decades and settings throughout America, the conclusions are left to the imagination of the reader.
In "Footsteps," Jacob is a young man who has lived on the Hawaiian island, Kahoolawe his whole life. Working on his father’s farm, he is tempted with thoughts of travel and leaving his homeland behind. With the encouragement of his grandmother, he takes a break from the farm and seeks out space to plan the next steps of his life. While in a deep sleep he is approached by a unique stranger that offers him another path. Overcome with fear he returns home to his grandmother who is near death and he cleans up the pieces.
Unlike the 1930's adventurer who is too afraid to leave home, "The Neptune Grouper" is a different tale about Francis and Ruth, a 1960's couple working as Russian spies. Francis and Ruth are collecting information on cyclotron which is related to the makings of the atomic bomb. Traveling the California coast, they are aware that the FBI is closing in on their trail after the relatives Julius and Ethel have been caught. Using exotic fish names as codewords, they try to avoid obvious statements that would lead to their capture.
"Dewdrops" is about couple camping in Idaho. This story has a twist of magical realism. Logan searches for his best friend and secret crush Natalie when she gets lost on a camping trip. Following her footprints, a second pair of prints appear and Logan fears that Natalie is in danger, until more wolf prints appear and there is no sign of a struggle. Logan is aware of Natalie's familiarity with the forest and comes to the realization that she might not be as lost as he thought.
This short collection of stories reflects on the hardship of relationships and the strength of the individual and choosing his or her path. Our lives are made of decisions that cause reactions that form our communities today.
