The Monastery

Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet. Scott was the first modern English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and Scottish literature.

The Monastery by Walter Scott is the historical novel published in 1820. The Monastery is the part of serious "Tales from Benedictine Sources". These novels involve multiple actors and a common theme describing the development and triumph Protestantism in Scotland. The actions of the story take place in south east Scotland, on the River Tweed in the Monastery of Kennaquhair. At this time the Scottish Reformation is just beginning and the monastery is in deadly peril. Two boys fall in love with Mary Avenel and during the whole story «each of them is trying to make best efforts to achieve her. History of love intertwines with a historical implication that won't set you free till the end.
