1950. The Republic of the South Moluccas declared themselves an independent nation. But the Sukarno government of Indonesia had other ideas. Wave after wave of Indonesian armed forces were sent to capture Moluccan territory and to quash the “rebellion.”
1963. Indonesian forces captured Christian Soumokil, JD, the South Moluccan president and commander in chief, and threw him into a rat-infested maximum security prison in Jakarta.
1965. Harold Lovestrand, an American missionary to western New Guinea, was falsely accused of assisting an armed revolt. He was arrested and put into that same prison—in a cell right next to Dr. Soumokil’s.
