This ebook edition is based on the 1901 novelization, which is an expanded version of the 1901 serialization and preferred by scholars over a later 1929 edition that made changes to the language. It's Shiel's best known work, and one of the earliest examples of the "last man" apocalyptic science fiction novel. M. P. Shiel (died 1947) was an influential writer of the modernist period. Their work has endured across generations and continues to be read and studied worldwide. The early science fiction genre, pioneered by visionaries like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, laid the groundwork for one of literature's most enduring and imaginative forms. The Purple Cloud stands as an early example of speculative fiction grappling with the promises and perils of science and technology.
