The Storm

Kuligin has watched the Volga for fifty years and still calls it marvelous—then a bully’s voice cuts across the riverbank. Saviol Prokofitch Dikoy is tearing into Boris, and everyone nearby knows better than to intervene.

In a Russian merchant town where wealth gives the powerful a thumb to press on the poor, even a holiday in the public garden brings no peace. Boris endures his uncle’s abuse because an inheritance—and his sister’s future—depends on pleasing a man no one can satisfy. Around them, fear and harsh rule reach into every household; at the heart of the play is Katerina, whose passionate nature cannot easily be made to submit. What happens when a spirit like hers meets a town built on obedience?
