George Ellery Hale was born on June 29, 1868, in Chicago, Illinois, and died on ferry 21, 1938. Since he was a child, he was interested in machinery and he built a small shop in their house, which he turned into a laboratory. The use of microscope awoke his interest in optics. George, as a fourteen-year-old boy, built his first telescope, which later was replaced with a secondhand Clark Refractor that was put on the roof of their Kenwood house. That was the birth of his passion for the universe and astronomy.

He studied at MIT, at the Observatory of Harvard College and the Observatory at Berlin. As a student, he invented the spectrohelioscope, with which he discovered the solar vortices. He made a lot of discoveries in his life, with that helping the development of astronomy and the understanding of the universe.

In this book, Hale talks about everything he knew, saw or explored. He talks about the history of telescopes and the additional equipment, the early instruments and the modern methods, the stars, the nebulas, the structure of the universe, etc. He also gives an overview of several constellations and analyzes them.

Along with all the information, there are a lot of photographs included.
