My husband, Ralph P. Newman, died of transfusion AIDS on May 14, 1985. In time, this simple statement of fact will become familiar only the name, date and gender will be changed.

It is a cruel irony that Ralphs obsessive search of lifes purpose culminated in 1980 at the pinnacle of his career five months before heart surgery and the infusion of AIDS contaminated blood.

The question of purpose has been the driving force behind the writing of this book. As you read, you will be motivated to seek more information and as a result learn how, not what, to think about AIDS.

As you walk with Ralph through his darkest days you will feel an identity with him. He too had hopes and dreams, was inspired by the beauty of nature, loved his family and the Star Spangled Banner brought a mist to his eyes. In many ways he was a lot like you.
