Voidian Poetry Volume 61

This collection explores the metaphysical and philosophical search for meaning — a journey that has shaped much of my writing, whether I intended it or not. My poems naturally lean toward the reflective, and some may even be described as metaphysical, though the term itself is notoriously difficult to define. In both philosophy and literature, "metaphysical" invites debate, yet certain traits are commonly recognised, and you will find many of them woven throughout these pages.

The poets later labelled "metaphysical" never chose that title for themselves. Samuel Johnson coined it, perhaps with a hint of mockery, yet the name endured. Their work was not always welcomed; some critics dismissed it as clever rhyme rather than true poetry. Even so, their influence grew, and their style continues to resonate because it speaks to the restless, questioning mind.

Metaphysical poetry often carries several hallmarks: irregular structure, shifting rhythms, paradox, irony, intellectual play, and subjects that reach beyond the ordinary. These poems frequently explore the uncertain space where science meets faith, where the physical world touches the immaterial, and where the human mind tries to reconcile what it sees with what it senses. They ask questions rather than offer answers, reflecting the tension of living in times of change.

I leave it to you to decide whether my work belongs in that tradition. I simply see these poems as philosophical explorations. When I revisited some of my more unusual pieces, I realised they already shared many traits associated with metaphysical poetry. My mind is drawn to opposing paradigms — certainty and doubt, the visible and the hidden, the rational and the mysterious. In an age shaped by uncertainty, this kind of exploration feels more necessary than ever.

Historically, metaphysical poetry emerged during a period of profound questioning. Our own age is no different. People everywhere are searching for meaning, asking timeless questions about purpose, identity, and our place in the world. The widening gap between science and religion has left many feeling unanchored. Perhaps peace comes when we learn to harmonise the spiritual with the physical rather than forcing them apart.

These poems use imagination to examine what makes us Human. Through unusual metaphors and the creation of various "Beings," I explore the qualities we share — and the ones we fear. If love, empathy, and awareness are not unique to us, then perhaps our role is not to dominate this world, but to protect it.
