Ever had a water fight? Was it fun? Did you enjoy it? You won’t enjoy this one. In 2007, many countries began to fight with one another over water. Water fights, since then, have become more and more common. The Sierra Club stated, “In 2000, 508 million people lived in thirty-one water stressed/scarce countries. By 2025, 3 billion people will live in such places. Today, 20% of the global population lacks access to safe drinking water while 50% live without adequate water sanitation.” Over four thousand children worldwide die each day by drinking polluted water. What does “water sanitation” mean to you?
In the United States, we use more than 400 billion gallons of water a day. Northern Kenya uses about 2 billion gallons a day. The Indian Coke company has plants that use 500,000 gallons a day to make soft drinks, and they pour out the residue sludge containing large amounts of lead and cadmium that destroy cropland. In Nigeria, fishermen have taken the Coke company to their high court, seeking to block the release of toxic waste that is polluting their rivers.
