Winning His Spurs

A Saxon boy in the reign of Richard the Lionheart goes as a squire to the Third Crusade, fights in the Holy Land, falls into Saracen hands, and comes home to outlaws, a perjured knight and a king who has to be found in a foreign prison. Henty wrote nearly a hundred boys' novels and put a real campaign inside each; here the history is Richard's, and the outremer chapters are the best of it. His hero wins by attention and patience, which is the only lesson Henty ever taught. Its 72 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
