Witches' Loaves

O. Henry (1862-1910), pseudonym of William Sydney Porter, is one of the most successful American writers ever. The master of brief genre, he became a bestselling author of collections of short stories in less than eight years. Noted for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings, O. Henry's literary works were translated into many languages and remain popular even nowadays.

Published in 1911, “Witches' Loaves” is an ironic short story about an old woman with the compassionate heart who kept the little bakery. One day she mistakes one of her customer for poor artist, and decides to help him. The story is about how we perceive others.
