Brontë tells it at two removes, through a housekeeper and a tenant who saw what they could not stop, so that the reader must assemble the cruelty from other people's excuses. Paintings of storm-lashed heath, candlelit farmhouse and moorland in every season; the Gilded Library ornament is windswept heather, bare thorn and a casement latch.
