Originally published to considerable acclaim in 1784, the novel was long thought lost until a copy was discovered in the Bristol University Library in 1963, by Burton R. Pollin, the editor of this edition. An epistolary novel set in Italy and Spain, these letters chronicle a melodramatic story of friendship betrayed and romance blighted, culminating "in a Gothic revenge".
