Nancy Carter marries Robert Gill secretly, but regrets her decision when Robert breaks his promise to her and becomes drunk. The next day a remorseful Robert kills himself, leaving Nancy to raise their unborn child alone. Twenty years pass and the Civil War begins. Now the family is headed by Colonel Carter of the Southern Army.
