Elizabeth Barrett was born in Durham in 1806.

She had from the age of 15 suffered from illness caused her to be a semi-invalid for long periods of time.

After her Mother died ,her Father took his family to London ,it was during this period that Elizabeth was introduced to some of the great poets and writers of her day including Wordsworth and Tennyson.

Between 1840 and 1844 Elizabeth concentrated on her poetry and when she published two volumes in 1844 , they were a popular and critical success.

In 1845 Elizabeth Barrett met Robert Browning another poet who admired her work, and after a period of courtship they eloped in 1846.

They went to live in Italy and had a child born in 1849.

Elizabeth’s poetry was widely acclaimed both in the United Kingdom and the United States.

However her health deteriorated and surrounded by her family, Elizabeth Barrett Browning died in 1861.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was influential to latter poets who admired her scope of subjects.
