Entering year 3 of the Covid 19 pandemic, the world decided the virus was mutating into an endemic state. I say world simply because the actual establishment of doctors and politicians who set policy decided to let the majority push the direction of the worlds health, vs the reality. Plenty of folk still getting sick, plenty dying (albeit thankfully declining), yet safeguards such as social distancing, wearing masks, etc, were infringing to much on people’s rights (vs empathy / sympathy for those suffering or the potential for sharing a virus with others whether you bore it’s symptoms or not). So with this as a backdrop my desire for capturing moments at night eroded, and experienced the unique (to me) feeling of burn out.
Whereas the previous couple of years I found salvation in wandering the cityscape at night (let alone since starting this project in 2013) capturing moments, the opposite was transpiring. I was letting weather elements such as the cold ‘freeze’ my desire to wander about the nocturnal hours. More people were out and about strangely, which become something of an irritant. The peace and quiet of the night was transforming in directions which weren’t comforting or conducive for my particular creative process. Frustrating to put it mildly.
Even with the aforementioned, I still pushed for a few months and conducted a number of shoots. The quality was still there thankfully, the negative energy not deterring the creative flow. It was more about me finding fulfillment not through quantity yet by embracing what was embraceable. Proud of myself for taking some steps forward vs shutting the whole thing down.
