Publisher Description
Sonnet from the Portuguese (1850) is a collection of 44 sonnets written by the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The collection is primarily known for its deeply personal and emotional exploration of love, capturing the intense feelings Browning experienced during her courtship and marriage to fellow poet Robert Browning. Although these sonnets were presented as if translated from a foreign language (the "Portuguese" is a fictionalized reference to the speaker's voice), they are in fact highly autobiographical and reflect Browning’s inner emotional landscape.
