The Lost Race

On a secret mission through the wild forests of ancient Cornwall, proud Briton Cororuc finds himself in a land that grows stranger with every step. In an eerie, seemingly deserted wood, he witnesses a baffling struggle between a wolf and a panther, then follows the vanishing beast's trail into a hidden realm where no ordinary laws seem to apply. His curiosity leads him straight into the lair of Buruc the Cruel, a notorious bandit chief, and battle erupts. Cororuc kills Buruc and one of his men, but the escape of another outlaw leaves him hunted by a widening ring of enemies. Forced to flee eastward, he launches into a desperate chase through the forest, using speed and cunning to stay alive as the woods close in around him. After being struck down and captured, Cororuc awakens among a strange, small, dark-skinned people armed with flint weapons and dressed in hides. Believing them to be the dwarfs of Cornish legend, he is dragged into a hidden cavern and deeper underground, discovering that the forest conceals a mysterious world far more uncanny than the bandits who first pursued him.
