About the Book
The short story "The Open Boat" was initially published by Stephen Crane in 1897. It recounts the harrowing ordeal of four individuals who are cast adrift in the middle of the ocean in a lifeboat after their ship collapses. Crane's personal experiences subsequent to the SS Commodore disaster off the coast of Florida, in which he and four others survived, form the basis of the narrative.
The anthology contains many stories besides "The Open Boat." Crane's early adventures in Mexico and the American Southwest are reflected in "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky". The novella "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets" gives a realistic account of life in New York City's slums.
