Jane Porter (1776–1850) was a British novelist and one of the earliest pioneers of historical fiction. Raised partly in Edinburgh, she developed a deep interest in Scottish history and national identity. She achieved international success with Thaddeus of Warsaw (1803) and The Scottish Chiefs (1810), celebrated for their heroic characters, dramatic storytelling, and themes of courage, honour, and freedom. Her historical romances helped shape the development of the modern historical novel.
