The Double

Double, written by Fyodor Dostoevsky and narrated by Geoffrey Giuliano & The Rebellion, is a haunting psychological masterpiece that explores the terrifying boundaries between identity, madness, paranoia, and the fragile nature of human consciousness.

Set in the shadowy streets of nineteenth-century St. Petersburg, this extraordinary novella follows Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, a lonely, insecure government clerk whose carefully ordered existence begins to collapse when he encounters a mysterious stranger who looks exactly like himself.

Even more disturbing, this uncanny double possesses everything Golyadkin lacks: confidence, charm, ambition, and the effortless ability to manipulate those around him. As the sinister newcomer gradually infiltrates his professional and personal life, Golyadkin becomes trapped in an increasingly nightmarish struggle against a man who appears determined to steal his identity and destroy his existence.

Through a brilliant combination of dark humor, psychological suspense, and disturbing surrealism, Dostoevsky examines the hidden conflicts of the human personality, the crushing pressures of social conformity, and the terrifying possibility that our greatest enemy may exist within ourselves.

First published in 1846, The Double stands among Dostoevsky’s earliest and most daring literary achievements, anticipating the profound psychological investigations that would later define his celebrated masterpieces Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov.
