These were not the people she was expecting to see. Jesse stopped short.
Nash Investigations was hired by the family of the missing birthday girl. At eighteen, she’d gone out to party and never come home. Her friends each told a very different story to the police. The police told the family there was nothing they could do. Their land wasn’t covered by this jurisdiction. By any jurisdiction. They’d wiped their hands of the case.
No one was even looking for her. Except Nash Investigations…
But when she stepped into the building, it seemed the entire town looked back at Jesse. Everyone who had given a dollar, or ten, was waiting to hear from her. She’d had the uneasy feeling this wasn’t some typical missing persons case.
She wasn’t sure what she was supposed to say. What questions to ask.
Standing beside the family, Cindy and Georgia silently stared at her. Subtly, they both shook their heads no.
Don’t do it. Don’t say what you’re thinking. Don’t ask. Whatever you think this is, you’re wrong…
So Jesse snapped her jaw shut, and waited.
