Publisher Description

An illustrated biography, this 1900 volume presents a detailed history of the life and accomplishments of Johann Sebastian Bach. A German composer of the Baroque period, Bach was also a brilliant organist, harpsichordist, violinist and violist. His most famous works, including the third and fourth Brandenburg Contertos and The Well-Tempered Clavier, are still remembered, studied and celebrated today for their technical depth and difficulty. Like most musicians, Bach was born into a musically inclined family; his father and all of his uncles were professional musicians. While he was fluent in several instruments, Bach's abilities on the organ were most revered during his career. It was his playing that made him most famous during his lifetime, not his composing. It wasn't until the first half of the 19th century that a revival of interest in his compositions would propel him to be known as one of the greatest composers of all time.
