Publisher Description

This book gives the story of how Britain's Shipyards managed to carry out such amazing work during World War Two in building new ships and fixing damaged ones.

The industry was rejuvenated after the slump prior to the war and managed enormous effects whilst training new people from all other walks of life to replace skilled workers including women coming into the shipyards for the first time.

A new class of ship, the Escort Carrier, was created to help fill the Atlantic Gap by converting existing merchant ships to small carriers. New methods of automation were devised to move small craft construction to many existing small outfits to free up the main yards for larger ships.
