Want to know why we love Scandinavian police procedurals? Henning Mankell’s lovably flawed Swedish police inspector Kurt Wallander is one reason! In the first book in Mankell’s series, an elderly couple has been murdered on an isolated farm near the tiny village of Ystad. There seems to be no motive for the savage attack, but appearances can be deceiving. Wallander is the kind of brilliant but troubled detective hero we live for: a divorced fortysomething who loves police work nearly as much as he loves opera, junk food, and drinking. (Kenneth Branagh does a great job playing him in the TV adaptation.) It’s remarkable how Mankell makes us feel charmed by such an imperfect man and emotionally invested in his ominous head-scratcher of a case. His descriptions of the bleak but beautiful Scandinavian landscape are also particularly bewitching. We hung on every word as Wallander works to unravel the whole mystery before it unravels his mind.
